Business Class, Honestly: Is It Worth the Miles?
Priya Anand July 8, 2026 7 min read
A frank look at when a premium cabin redemption makes sense — and when you are better off in economy with cash in your pocket.
The honest question
Before you redeem 80,000 miles for a business-class seat, ask: what would those miles buy in economy?
If the same miles could book three economy round-trips, you are trading three trips for one nicer one. That trade is deeply personal. Neither answer is wrong.
When business class is clearly worth it
- Overnight long-hauls (9+ hours) where sleep genuinely matters.
- Redemptions under 70,000 miles one-way to Europe or Asia.
- When you arrive straight into a meeting and need to be functional.
When it is not
- Daytime flights under 6 hours.
- Award rates above 120,000 miles one-way.
- When cash economy is under $400.
The real luxury
It is not the lie-flat seat. It is arriving without the dread of jetlag. If your redemption delivers that, it is worth every mile.
